SOUTH AFRICAN EDITORS SLAM ATTACKS ON JOURNALISTS

JOHANNESBURG-- The South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) has strongly condemned the recent spate of attacks on journalists in KwaZulu-Natal Province.

The attacks took centre stage during the Durban Dialogues Multi-stakeholder Media Freedom Round Table held at the International Convention Centre in Durban.

In recent months, journalists in the province have reportedly come under attack during service delivery protests and have been verbally and physically abused and manhandled by the police at crime scenes.

A statement released by SANEF here Tuesday emphasized the importance of protecting the safety of journalists.

They fear that the attacks, if lect unchecked, could develop into a trend, especially in the run-up to country's general election next year.
