South Africa's Department of International Relations and Co-operation has given an assurance to the nation and the international community that diplomats based in South Africa will continue to be safe.
The assurance came Wednesday following the recent assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov. His assassination has shocked the international community.
Karlov was reportedly shot dead by an off-duty policeman in Turkey who was protesting against Russia's involvement in Syria.
International Relations Department spokesman Clayson Monyela said: "South Africa are host to the second biggest community of diplomats in the world, second only to Washington DC and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that the diplomats and foreign ambassadors in South Africa are safe.
"We have got within the South African Police Service (SAPS) a unit dedicated to Diplomatic Protection of all diplomats who are based in South Africa. So we are quite confident that they will continue to enjoy the protection that they receive from the South African Government."
