The State Department's Bureau of Counterterrorism, in partnership with the National Counterterrorism Center and the Department of Justice's Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (DOJ/OPDAT), hosted a regional workshop of counterterrorism practitioners from North Africa at the U.S. Embassy and International Institute of Justice in Valletta, Malta on March 14-15.
The workshop advanced U.S. efforts to defeat ISIS by increasing cooperation with and between the North African governments on issues relating to ISIS's external operations and foreign terrorist fighters. Participants included investigators, prosecutors, police commissioners, border security officials, and policy makers who shared expertise on law enforcement, border security, and counterterrorism finance methods and tools. Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia, as well as the European Union, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom participated in the workshop.
