NINE BABIES DIE AT JOHANNESBURG HOSPITAL FOLLOWING BACTERIA OUTBREAK

JOHANNESBURG-- Nine babies have died at the RahimaMoosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg over a period of a few months, following a bacteria outbreak at the facility, says the acting chief executive officer, Doctor Frew Benson.

He said here Sunday that the hospital had conducted an investigation but could not determine the cause of the outbreak. However, the hospital has now increased control measures at the facility.

We had an investigation for nacroticentrocolysis, which is an inflammation of the bowel, particularly in premature babies ...... we did not find any intact cause for the outbreak," he added.

"The fact is that it affected about 43 babies .... over a period of a few months ... nine of them demised. We have strengthened infection control measures implemented at the hospital."
